Queensland Road Safety Week 2024
My first Mercy Day celebration was a thoroughly enjoyable one. It was wonderful to see the house spirit on display, the students working together on the tug of war and competing against each other in a whole school game of hats and a big quiz. On Mercy Day, we celebrate our heritage as a school established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1881. This congregation of nuns, established by Catherine McAuley, were dedicated to serving the poor, sick and uneducated. Their sacrifice and service to the students of St John’s School is recognised and celebrated on this day. The students had an awesome time, and it was great to loosen the reigns a little and see the energy and enthusiasm on display. Following the competitive activities, it was really enjoyable to be able to walk around all of the activities on offer and see the students engaging in fun activities of their choice.
On Monday night, we thanked the sponsors and volunteers who ensured that our students were able to participate in the Confro and QISSN carnivals in Townsville. The sponsors help to ensure the costs of participating in these tournaments are not prohibitive for families, and for that we are very grateful. It is an experience that will not be forgotten by our students. Please keep the following businesses in mind for your needs in Roma: Roma Sands, Hayward Consultants, Crawfo’s Tyres, Shellshear Diesel, McDonald’s Roma, Gorgeous, Humphreys Electrical, Michael Challenor Electrical, Roma Concrete, Black Toyota and KP Tilt Trays.
To the coaches, volunteers, and teachers, I appreciate the time given to support our students. I acknowledge that it is time away from your families and time taken on your holidays. They learn so much from your guidance, and I hope the experience was as valuable for you as it was for them. Thank you to Matthew Creeley, Matt & Sharon Edwards, Cooper Anderson, Alex Coonan, Lucas Crawford, Ryan Doig, Mel & Steve Thornthwaite, Ross Penrose, Sophie Tilbury and Bronte McKillop.
Cheers,
Mark
This term in English, Year Two students have been delving into the world of narrative writing. We've explored several great stories such as ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, ‘The Gruffalo’, and ‘Alfie’s Search for Destiny’. Students have enjoyed exploring the characters and using their creativity to re-write changes to these storylines.
This week, we have started creating our own narratives and will soon use Book Creator to produce good copy versions of our stories that we can share with our peers.
We are loving using our imaginations to write our narratives and are looking forward to exploring more books at our upcoming Book Week Celebrations!
Our Modern Historians have been working hard through Unit Four: International Experiences in the Modern World. Our first inquiry topic in this unit saw students exploring the period of The Cold War, where we examined key concepts ranging from the underlying ideologies of the conflict through to the in-depth study of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Students engaged in thorough research, source analysis and evaluation which culminated in a historical essay based on an inquiry process.
Students are now working on the second topic in the unit focusing particularly on Australia and the Vietnam War. The students are continuing to refine their comprehension and source analysis and evaluation skills through examination of a range of historical sources relating to the topic.
Term Three has been a very busy term for our mighty Marians and there is much more to come in the following weeks.
Mercy Day was held on Friday of Week Four where our Marian students enjoyed a fun day, showing both school and House spirit. We are very proud of how the Marian students represented their House on this day and were so happy to see everyone getting involved and cheering on their fellow students.
Wednesday of Week Five saw our first Marian House assembly as leaders. We would like to thank everyone who helped out in the lead up to the assembly as well as on the day. Whether you were someone who gave up their lunch break to help set up the P & F Centre, or our Primary teachers who organised their students to get up and share what they’ve been up to with the rest of Marian, to our tech guys and of course Mrs Henning, we are extremely grateful for your help and support in ensuring the smooth running of our first Marian House assembly.
As many of us know, Book Week is fast approaching, so be sure to get your costumes organised. We can’t wait to see all our mighty Marians dressed up as their favourite character!
100 Days till Graduation breakfast was held on Thursday morning. The Year 12s enjoyed a delicious breakfast celebrating the little amount of time they have left here at school. We wish them all the best with their upcoming external exams; we are sure you will all work hard and get the results you deserve.
Go Marian!

Best day of the year!!!! St John’s was abuzz on Friday, Week Four, as we celebrated the founders of our school, the Sisters of Mercy. Their legacy lives on in our school through the Spirit of St John’s, based upon the four Mercy values of Compassion, Justice, Excellence and Respect. As a way of honouring Catherine McAuley and the courageous, resilient nuns who moved to Roma in 1881, students participated in a whole school liturgy, quiz, whole school ‘Hats’, tug-of-war, activities and nun races. The energy within the school was electric and participation from students was at an all-time high. It was a hotly contested competition to see who the overall winner was with Theresian being the deserving winners on the day.
Thank you to all the teachers, school officers and student leaders who did so much to make the day a huge success!
This term in Theresian, we have been keeping very busy doing many different things, including STEMPUNKS, Screen Project Outcome Day and Mercy Day, just to name a few. The STEM composite class of Years Nine and Ten took part in the Future Maranoa 2050 event on 17 July organised by STEMPUNKS. They developed their teamwork skills and learnt valuable information about STEM.
On 31July, Theresian held their House assembly. This showcased many Theresians’ hard work and positive attitudes, as our Tigers were awarded with their certificates.
On Friday, 02 August, St John’s celebrated Mercy Day where we started with an assembly which was followed by our Mercy Day quiz where all three Houses went head-to-head. Theresian didn’t come out on top for the quiz but were victorious in the Prep to Year Three, Years Four to Six, and Years Seven to Twelve tug-of-war. Theresian Tigers kept roaring in the nun races coming first in that as well as in the war cries. These successes meant Theresian were the overall winners for the day. The Theresian leaders would like to say a massive thank you to all of the students who fought to win in all events, as well as the teachers for all their hard work, especially Mrs Parker for organising the day.
Thank you everyone,
Theresian Leaders.
Theresian Assembly Awardees Term 3
On Thursday in Week Five, our Year 12 students marked the significant milestone of 100 days until graduation with a special breakfast celebration. This event not only acknowledges the hard work and dedication they have shown towards their studies thus far but also serves as a reminder to stay focused and committed as they approach the final stretch of their school journey. It was a joyful occasion, filled with camaraderie and reflection, as students came together with their peers to celebrate their achievements and look back on the experiences that have shaped their time at school so far.

Mark your calendars for August 26-30 and join us in promoting road safety awareness across Queensland. Here at St John’s, we are committed to ensuring our children and broader school community are safe on the roads. That’s why we have asked our local Adopt-a-Cops to come and speak with the students regarding road safety. It would be great if we could work together to make our roads safer for everyone.
